Close by is the historic town of Winchelsea, population just 400, with its two pubs, four small shops and a fragment of its massive old parish church. It was founded in 1292 by Edward the First and is one of Confederation of Cinque Ports, raised to defend the realm against the detested French.
Wickham Manor provides a perfect base to visit the ancient towns of Rye, Battle and Hastings and is within easy reach of Great Dixter, Sissinghurst, Pashley Manor, Scotney, Bodiam, Hever and Leeds Castles as well as Canterbury Cathedral.

Dover and the Channel Tunnel are not far if you exhaust all the local sites and fancy a day trip to France.
