ROTATION PLAN

 

There are two types of rotation employed in the arable areas.

 

Type 1.

This type is suited to areas that are not ideal for winter crops, either as a result of poor drainage or due to potential rabbit damage.

 

Type 2.

This type is for land that suits winter cropping.

 

TYPE 1 ROTATION – areas not suited for winter cropping

 

Year 1:  Turnips  / Spring Wheat (under sow Huia white clover)

Or leave in grass until spring then Spring Wheat.

 

Turnips:                                 Plough / Power Harrow / Broadcast /Ring Roll

Spring Wheat:                      Plough / Power Harrow / Combi Drill / Ring roll / broadcast clover.

 

Note: Graze ewes on the Turnips over the winter.

 

 

Year 2:   W.Clover / Spring Oats        

                Or W.Clover / Spring Barley

Or Manure / Potatoes after winter stubble

 

W.Clover:              Chop straw / Top stubbles short.

Spring Oats:          Plough / Power Harrow  / Combi Drill / Ring Roll if dry.

Spring Barley:       Plough / Power Harrow  / Combi Drill / Ring Roll if dry.

Potatoes:               Spread manure early spring / Plough / Rotospike /Power Harrow /Plant Potatoes.

Harvest as earlies to second earlies

 

Note: Graze the sheep on the W.Clover  during the autumn

 

Year 3:   Turnips / Peas (acid soils)

                Spring Beans (alkaline soils)

 

Turnips: Chop straw / Cultivate H.D (Howard Delta) / Power Harrow / Broadcast /Ring Roll

Peas & Beans:      Plough / Power Harrow / Direct Drill / Ring Roll

 

Note: Graze the sheep over the winter on the Turnips

 

Year 4:   Phacelia / Spring Wheat

 

Phacelia                                 Chop straw / Cultivate H.D / Power Harrow /Broadcast / Ring Roll

Spring Wheat:                      Plough / Power Harrow / Combi Drill

 

Note: Graze the sheep on the westerwolds during the autumn /winter

 

Year 5:   Grass-Clover Ley .

Autumn sown: Chop straw / Cultivate H.D / Power Harrow / Broadcast / Ring roll.

 

Graze during autumn /winter to control volunteers, weeds, and aid tillering.

 

Year6:    Grass-Clover Ley

TYPE 2 ROTATION – areas suited to winter cropping

 

Year 1:   Winter Wheat or Spring Wheat ( depending on winter grazing requirements. )

 

Year 2:   Winter Oats or 

                Winter Barley or

              Manure / Potatoes

 

Year 3:   Turnips / Peas (acid soils)

Spring Beans (alkaline soils)

 

Year 4:   Winter Wheat

 

Year 5:   Grass-Clover Ley

Cultivate H.D / Power Harrow / Ring Roll / Broadcast / Flat Roll

Year 6:   Grass-Clover Ley          

Graze.
