ROTATION PLAN

 

There are two types of rotation employed in the arable areas.

 

Type 1.

This type is suited to areas that are not ideal for winter crops, either as a result of poor drainage or due to potential rabbit damage.

 

Type 2.

This type is for land that suits winter cropping.

 

TYPE 1 ROTATION – areas not suited for winter cropping

 

Year 1:           Kale / Spring Wheat

 

Kale:                           Plough / Power Harrow / Broadcast /Flat Roll

Spring Wheat:             Plough / Power Harrow / Combi Drill / Ring roll

 

Note: Graze ewes on the Kale over the winter.

 

Year 2:           Phacelia / Lupins (acid soils), under-sown with Yellow Trefoil

Spring Beans (alkaline soils), under-sown with Yellow Trefoil

  

Phacelia :                    Chop wheat straw,(or bale) / Top stubbles short / Direct Drill / Flat Roll .

Lupins & Beans:          Plough / Power Harrow / Combi Drill / Broadcast Y.Tref. /Ring Roll

 

Note: Graze lambs during the winter on the Phacelia & Wheat volunteers.

 

Year 3:           Yellow Trefoil / Spring Oats

 

Yellow Trefoil:           Chop straw / Top stubbles short.

Spring Oats:                Plough / Power Harrow  / Combi Drill / Ring Roll if dry.

 

Note: Graze the sheep on the Yellow Trefoil during the autumn

 

Year 4:           Vetches / Spring Barley

 

Vetches:                      Chop Straw / Top stubbles short / Direct Drill / Flat Roll

Spring Barley:             Plough / Power Harrow / Combi Drill / Ring Roll

 

Note: Graze the sheep over the winter on the Vetches

 

Year 5:           Turnips / Peas (alkaline soils)

                        Spring Beans (acid soils)

 

Turnips:                       Chop straw / Top stubbles short / Direct Drill / Flat Roll

Peas & Beans:             Plough / Power Harrow / Combi Drill / Ring Roll

 

Note: Graze the sheep over the winter on the Turnips

 

Year 6:           Westerwolds Rye Grass / Spring Wheat , undersown with Grass-Clover Ley

 

Westerwolds:              Chop straw / Top stubbles short / Direct Drill / Flat Roll

Spring Wheat:             Plough / Power Harrow / Combi Drill / Broadcast Grass-clover / Ring Roll

 

Note: Graze the sheep on the westerwolds during the autumn /winter

 

Year 7:           Grass-Clover Ley

 

Chop straw / Top stubbles short

 

Year 8:           Grass-Clover Ley

TYPE 2 ROTATION – areas suited to winter cropping

 

Year 1:           Winter Wheat or Kale / Spring Wheat

 

Year 2:           Phacelia / Spring Beans (alkaline soils) , under-sown with Yellow Trefoil

                        Lupins (acid soils), under-sown with Yellow Trefoil

 

Year 3:           Yellow Trefoil / Spring Oats, under-sown with White Clover

 

Year 4:           Winter Barley

Graze clover late summer / Direct Drill Barley Into clover

 

Year 5:           Turnips / Peas (alkaline soils)

Spring Beans (acid soils)

 

Year 6:           Winter Wheat

 

Year 7:           Grass-Clover Ley

Plough / Power Harrow /Ring Roll /Broadcast / Flat Roll in autumn

 

Year 8:           Grass-Clover Ley
